Frequently asked questions

Why is a windshield important?

The most obvious function of an automobile windshield is to protect the driver and passengers from the wind and other outside elements while driving. However, a lesser known fact is that car windshields are responsible for 60% of a car's structural integrity in the event of a rollover. Depending on the severity of the rollover, an inside cabin cave-in is almost certain without a properly installed windshield in place.

How is a windshield different from other auto glass?

Both windshields and other forms of auto glass, such as side door windows and rear window glass, have been engineered with special safety features in mind when it comes to collisions. Windshields are made of what is called laminated glass while standard auto glass is made from tempered glass.

What is Laminated Glass?

Car windshields and other forms of laminated glass are actually made up of two panes of glass which are separated by a thin layer of vinyl or liquid resin. It is this interlayer that that gives laminated glass its special "shatter-proof" feature - Instead of breaking into smaller pieces, laminated glass upon collision will break but will largely remain in one piece preventing smaller pieces of broken glass from entering the vehicle.

What is Tempered Glass?

Tempered glass, also known as "toughened glass", is glass that has undergone special temperature and chemical treatments in production to produce a type of glass that is extra strong and more resistant to breakage than regular flat glass. Another important characteristic of tempered glass is what happens when it does break - Unlike normal glass, that breaks into large, sharp jagged pieces, tempered glass shatters into many tiny pieces that are substantially less likely to cut or injure anyone seriously.
